Lluc Casares

Saxophonist and clarinetist, fond of composition and arrangements for different instrumental formats.

Education

Lluc Casares (Barcelona, 1990) is the first person from the Iberian Peninsula to have completed the prestigious Artist Diploma program at the Juilliard School in New York under the tutelage of teachers such as Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Washington or Ben Wolfe.

Before studying at Juilliard, he completed his higher degree at ESMUC (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya) and his master's degree at CvA (Conservatorium Van Amsterdam) where he received lessons from the European legend Ferdinand Povel, During this time in Lluc did a half-year exchange at Temple University (Philadelphia) where he studied with the renowned saxophonist Dick Oatts.

Concerts

He has played at some of the most important festivals in Europe, such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Marciac Jazz Festival, Jazz Middelhein, Baloise Session and the Festival de Jazz de Terrassa. He has also played at clubs such as Dizzy's Club Coca Cola and Fat Cat in New York, Bimhuis in Amsterdam, Jamboree in Barcelona and Jazz at Lincoln Center in Shanghai. Throughout his career, Lluc has been lucky enough to share the stage with musicians such as Dr. John, Nicholas Payton, Frank Wess, Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, Jon Faddis, Jesse Davis, Joe Farnsworth, Jesse Van Ruller, Arturo Sandoval, Wendell Brunious, Grant Stewart, Ben Van Gelder or Benjamin Herman among others.

Recordings

Lluc has released 4 albums as a leader; the latest, Ride (The Changes 2023) is recorded in Amsterdam and features the great guitarist Jesse Van Ruller. The previous one was Septet (The Changes 2021) and before that Sketches Overseas (Outside In Music 2018). Recorded in New York, Sketches Overseas won the "best Jazz album of 2018" award given by the Enderrock group. His first album as a leader was Red (Temps Records 2015). Lluc has recorded more than 20 albums as a sideman, co-leads the Barcelona Art Orquestra and is part of the groups Smack Dab and The Gramophone Allstars Big Band among others.

Career

Together with a group of like-minded musician friends, in 2019 Lluc formed The Changes, a collective and record label aimed at launching new projects without the guidelines and limitations of external agents. In less than 4 years, The Changes have published more than 20 works.

One of the high points of his career was when the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis invited him to play a song in a packed Palau de la Música Catalana in February 2020.

Lluc plays a Backun Q Series clarinet and D'Addario reeds.

Teaching

Lluc teaches at the ESMUC, at the ESEM (Musicians Workshop), he has also taught at the CSMIB (Conservatori Superior de Música de les Illes Balears) and has taught a seminar at the Conservatory of Turin (Italy) and several masterclasses in 2 institutes in Shanghai (China).
