Laura Young

Education

Born in Toronto with Irish and Russian origins, Laura began her music studies at the age of seven and started playing the guitar at nine years old. With an uncommon passion, she dedicated herself intensely to achieve technical mastery of the instrument, showcasing evident musicality from the moment she began to play.

She earned her Bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Toronto, under the guidance of Eli Kassner. Scholarships from national organisations in Canada, such as the Canada Arts Council and Ontario Arts Council, provided her with the opportunity to continue her studies with some of the world's finest guitarists, including David Russell and Leo Brouwer. Studying with Hubert Kaeppel at the Hochschule in Cologne, Germany, she obtained her Master's degree with honours.

Concerts

As a soloist, Laura has performed to great acclaim, offering programs in concert halls worldwide, from the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Germany, to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Canada, and the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid. She is also a regular guest artist and instructor at International Guitar Festivals in various locations such as Toronto, Canada; Esztergom, Hungary; Gdansk, Poland; Cologne, Germany, and Volos, Greece, among others.

Besides her solo career, Laura is a founding member of the successful Cologne Trio, which performed throughout Europe and the Americas in the 1990s. Currently, she collaborates in a duo with the Greek-Canadian singer Frances Pappas in the ensemble Lagrimosa Belta, which presents pieces written for them by composers like Helmut Jasbar, Feliu Gasull i Altisent, or Hakenberg Stefan, all based on contemporary explorations of traditional popular music.

Between 1997 and 2001, Young was the founder and artistic director of the International Guitar Festival of Amsterdam.

Awards

Since she was a young girl, and at every stage of her career, Laura has been recognised as a talented artist, winning prestigious awards in international competitions such as the "Andrés Segovia" in Palma de Mallorca, and the "Jacinto e Inocencio Guerrero" in Madrid, among many others.

Teaching

Laura Young has been a professor at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) in Barcelona since 2003.
