Specific Competences

Learning outcomes (general objectives)
- Become familiar with the range of technologies available for conducting empirical research in musicology, sonology and related disciplines.
- Understand procedures for collecting, capturing and adapting data so that they can be processed using digital information-processing tools.
- Understand formal methods for analysing and modelling different types of data generated in musical performance, creation, dissemination and listening contexts.
- Learn to draw quantitative conclusions from data generated in diverse musical contexts and evaluate the extent to which these conclusions can be generalised using digital technologies and computational tools.
Contents
Methods and techniques of empirical research. Data digitisation: text, musical scores, audio and video. Fundamentals of statistics and computational models. Technologies for the automatic analysis of musical scores. Technologies for the analysis of audio recordings. Data visualisation technologies. Information retrieval technologies.
Teaching methodology
Teaching and learning combine lectures (presentation of course content), discussion and seminar sessions, group work and student presentations.
Assessment systems
Assessment is based on continuous assessment, founded on an initial diagnostic assessment and culminating in a summative assessment that determines the final grade. Continuous assessment is carried out through a range of assessment activities, including class participation and engagement, presentations, assignments and/or readings completed outside class, submission of written work, and written or oral examinations.
