Transversal competences:

Specific competences:

MU1: To know the musical structure of works from different repertoires of the Western tradition and other traditions, with the ability to fully appreciate their syntactic and sonic aspects.

MU5: To know musical sources and the tools for accessing them, as well as the techniques required for their dissemination.

MU7: To acquire critical ability to assess products of musical activity from different periods from a perspective that integrates artistic, historical and social aspects.

Learning outcomes (general objectives)

1. To identify some of the theoretical approaches and methodological models of ethnomusicological research since the mid-20th century, and to establish the relativity of Western concepts of music and the scope of the object of study.

2. To assess different models of ethnomusicology and sociology of music in relation to the social sciences as a whole and according to research objectives.

3. To apply different analytical procedures of contemporary ethnomusicology, situate them within their scientific context and evaluate them from a critical perspective.

4. To understand the significance of musical practices within diverse societies in general and in East Asia in particular.

5. To demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the current panorama of lines of thought and research in ethnomusicology.

6. To explain and apply, through specific musical examples, research methods and models of sound organisation through which ethnomusicology describes different traditional musics.

7. To adapt and create appropriate models for newly described musical traditions. To relate models of sound organisation to concepts of music and to the musical behaviours of each studied culture.

8. To situate musical activity as a communicative activity whose meaning derives from a specific social and cultural context, and to deepen understanding of some concepts within ethnomusicological research.

9. To situate musical activity as a communicative activity whose meaning derives from a specific social and cultural context. To identify the most relevant musical behaviours of the cultural areas of East Asia.

Contents

Constructive materials of traditional musics from different cultures, mainly within the Far East. Uses and functions of music within the social framework and diverse activities (the social aspect of music). The importance of cultural relativism in relation to music within the cultural area studied. Research methods and different models for the description and understanding of traditional musics from the studied cultural area, situated within the cultural context of each musical activity. Analysis and use of different models for describing traditional musics in relation to specific cases.

Teaching methodology

The teaching-learning methodology in classes includes lectures (presentation of topics), debate and discussion sessions, group work sessions and student presentations of topics.
