SO5: Know and critically evaluate the most recent trends and developments in different fields of music technology, being able to assess their implications in the processes of music creation, performance, dissemination and reception, as well as design and program applications for composition and performance in real time or deferred time.

DI6: Know technological applications for musical notation, recording, editing and performance.

Learning outcomes (general objectives)

  1. Develop an overview of the main musical applications of music computing, as well as technological developments related to sound devices.
  1. Gain in-depth knowledge of the main musical communication protocols currently used and practically experiment with real and virtual sound artefacts developed with current technologies.
  1. Gain in-depth knowledge of the conventions of Western musical notation and the challenges they present in music notation software.
  1. Understand the state of the art and become familiar with data-entry technologies for notation (MIDI, OCR, audio transcription).
  1. Be able to transcribe musical scores of medium and high complexity, customizing notation software to address the transcription of scores using non-standard notation.
  1. Promote critical thinking and scientific methodology regarding contemporary technological developments.
  1. Develop a general understanding of the possibilities offered by technology in music and learn to use various computer tools of musical interest.
  1. Use the different technical devices involved in sound production.
  1. Correctly select, configure and manipulate the different technical devices involved in sound production, and develop the practical skills required to carry out a simple sound recording session.

Contents

General concepts regarding the application of technology to musical notation and its role as support for composition. Applications in different working environments. Internet as a communication tool and source of resources. Characteristics and selection criteria according to different needs and available resources.

Computers: types and specifications for musical applications. Synthesizers: types and specifications. Controllers: types and suitability according to needs and objectives. Other peripherals: audio and graphics.

Teaching methodology

The assessment system is based on continuous assessment, founded on diagnostic evaluation and implemented through summative assessment leading to the final grade.

Continuous assessment is carried out through different assessment records derived from specific activities such as participation and class work, completion of assignments, compositions, practical activities, submission of written work or completion of written, oral or listening tests.
