The Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) is the only official public institution in Catalonia authorised to offer Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Advanced Artistic Education in Music, within the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). These degrees are fully equivalent to university-level bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The school also offers other postgraduate and continuing education programmes.

The school was born in 2000 by a decision of the Government of the Generalitat de Catalunya and opened in September 2001. Its management was entrusted to the Fundació Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (DOGC 3530 de desembre de 2001). Currently, it has more than 900 students enrolled in the bachelor’s degree, master’s degrees, graduate studies, continuous training and extension courses.

During the school year, many activities take place at the ESMUC, such as concerts, conferences and master classes open to both the ESMUC community and the external public. During June and July, summer courses are offered, aimed at a wider audience. The school is also committed to the advanced training of young people between the ages of 8 and 17 with high musical abilities through its ESMUC Junior program.

The fact that students from very diverse fields come together in ESMUC, from more than 25 countries, makes the experience of studying at the School very enriching, and contributes to making it one of the most requested destinations tendered by Erasmus students.

Mission, vision and values

Being part of ESMUC means growing in a transversal and flexible learning environment, where all musical styles and specialisations are present and coexist on equal terms.

Our mission is to prepare students to meet professional challenges at an international level and to enter the music world with the ability to transform the cultural ecosystem.

To achieve these goals, ESMUC places artistic excellence and social commitment on the same level, through an institutional model based on:

  • Non-hierarchy between musical genres.

  • Technological innovation applied to music.

  • Thinking in future music professionals and the society as a whole.

  • Connected and coordinated with the educational and musical networks of Catalonia and all over the world.

  • Open to the entire music industry to promote the music in all its dimensions.

  • Committed to the goals of the 2030 Agenda, in particular Quality Education, Gender Equality and Environmental Sustainability.
