Education

Miquel Bernat studied in Valencia, Madrid, Brussels, Rotterdam, and the USA.

Concerts

He has performed with the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona and the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. As a member of the Duo Contemporain in Rotterdam and the founder of the Ictus Ensemble in Brussels, he has played in numerous shows with choreographer A. T. de Keersmaeker in many shows.

As a soloist, he has stood out in performances with the Orquesta de RTVE, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Murcia, Remix Ensemble, Ictus Ensemble, Plural Ensemble, Proyecto Guerrero, Grup Instrumental, MusikFabrik, Borusan Orchestra Istanbul, Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, Orquestra de Cadaqués, or the Orquesta Nacional do Porto.

He premiered percussion concertos by David del Puerto, César Camarero, Luis de Pablo, Mauricio Sotelo, and Joan Guinjoan. He also premiered at IRCAM/Centre George Pompidou, "Mantis Walk in a Metall Space" by Javier Álvarez, the world's first concerto for Steel Drums.

Awards

He was awarded the Outsanding Graduation Award in Madrid, 1st Prize and Honorary Mention in Brussels, the "Special Prix" from the Gaudeamus competition in the Netherlands, and 2nd prize in the Aspen Nakamichi Competition. In 2016, he received the BBVA Foundation's grant for Researchers and Cultural Creators to promote and disseminate the collection of Concert Studies for Marimba, published in early 2017.

Career

Miquel Bernat is a director, teacher, composer, and performer. He is the founder of Drumming-GP, one of the most dynamic percussion groups on the international scene, and critically acclaimed.

He is passionate about contemporary creation and committed to expanding the art of percussion.

Teaching

He was a professor at the conservatories of Rotterdam and Brussels. Currently, he is a professor at ESMUC and is actively developing projects in Portugal, creating the Superior Percussion Course at ESMAE Porto, University of Aveiro. He has been invited as a teacher at the International Summer Course in Darmstadt, the "Sistema de Orquestas de Venezuela" (FESNOJIV), Instrumenta de Oaxaca, and CIVEBRA in Brasilia.
