Education

Joan Asensio was the first Catalan to obtain a higher degree in flamenco guitar, which he studied at the Rafael Orozco Conservatory in Córdoba (2007).

Career

As a guitarist he has worked with artists such as José Manuel Álvarez, Sara Barrero, Susana Escoda or Jorge Mesa Valle "El Pirata" among others. He has worked at the tablao Tarantos in Barcelona with the Técnica Mixta group. He has also served as a member of the jury for the Certàmen Internacional de Guitarra Flamenca Ciutat de L'Hospitalet and is an advisor for the flamenco.cat website.

At ESMUC, Joan Asensio designed the curriculum for the Master's in Flamenco and the Master's in Flamencology, of which he is the coordinator. In the Flamencology Master’s he was the promoter of the entire online strategy. He was also head of the Traditional Music Department (2014-2021). As a teacher he has incorporated new pedagogical elements into flamenco, developed a new approach to teaching flamenco analysis and transcription, as well as rhythmical resources applied to the teaching of this musical style.

Teaching

At ESMUC he designed the curriculum for the Master's in Flamenco, of which he is the coordinator. He was also head of the department until 2021.
