ESMUC Digital

From September 2011, and until April 2020, the School published the ESMUC digital magazine. The magazine had an Editorial Board that decided on the various topics to address and evaluated the articles; and was made up of representatives from various areas and departments of the school.

After 82 issues and a forced pause, the magazine will soon resume with a new format and sections.

ESMUC digital is also present on Facebook and Twitter.

Investigación artística en música: problemas, experiencias y propuestas

Project with the support of the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes

Portada del llibre Investigacion Artistica En Musica

Artistic research in music is a field full of questions, which this book delves into by offering an organised overview of its limits and possibilities, as well as its most recent discussions. Based on experiences in European and Ibero-American higher musical education centres where first, second, or third cycle students develop final projects oriented towards artistic practice, the authors detect some trends in the topics and methods used, and propose new strategies for the development of this type of research.

The book is intended for students, teachers and managers of higher music education. It does not aim to decipher all the dilemmas of artistic research in music. It simply offers its own interpretation and indicates possible paths for its development in our environment. All of this based on current and real practices.

The book and the research work on which it is based have been co-financed by the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya and the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes de México through the Programa de Fomento en Proyectos y Coinversiones Culturales, issue 2013, SC/PFPCC/I29/078/13. It is part of the activities of the Musical Interpretation and Creation Research Group (2014 SGR 1382).

La música cuenta. Retórica, narratividad, dramaturgia, cuerpo y afectos

Project with the support of the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes

Rubén López Cano (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya)

Portada del llibre La música cuenta

Music is not a collection of inert and passive sound objects. It is a way of navigating through time, through tensions and relaxations, retentions and propulsions, speed changes and accelerations, doubts, blows and outbursts, terrifying exclamations or cries of joy that emerge from its always-moving surface. All music seems to want to go somewhere by crossing different emotional zones. It often creates in our minds and hearts the feeling that listening to it is like going through intense states similar to those of theatrical dramas or literary narratives.

La música cuenta proposes strategies based on tools from rhetoric, semiotics and hermeneutics for the study of the expressive meaning of music. Rather than -or in addition to- the structures or macroformal configuration of the analysed pieces, it seeks to unravel the mechanisms that make each musical piece a small drama, an encapsulated piece of time that traps us with its internal conflicts.

The book is especially dedicated to anyone involved in musical performance and seeks to offer tools to imagine musical performances that are intense, exciting and full of personalised expressive intent It aims to provide instruments for the analysis, artistic interpretation or performative analysis of music.

The book and the research work on which it is based have been co-financed by the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya and the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes de México
