Tomàs Abel

Violinist, member of the Quartet Casals and the Ludwig Trio.

Education

Abel Tomàs Realp began studying music with his father and violin with his uncle. He was a student of Zakhar Bron and Sergei Fatkouline at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, and later studied with Víktor Trejakov at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. His chamber music training has been deeply influenced by maestros Walter Levin, Rainer Schmidt, and György Kurtág.

Career

As a soloist, he has performed with various orchestras, including the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Vallès Symphony Orchestra, the Euskadi Symphony Orchestra, the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, and with conductors such as James Judd, Junichi Hirokami, Victor Pablo Perez, Carlo Rizzi, Rubén Gimeno, and Zubin Mehta.

He has given numerous violin recitals with pianists like Orly Shaham, Miri Yampolsky, Amir Katz, Eldar Nebolsin, Kennedy Moretti, and Hyo Sun Lim. He has also collaborated in chamber music concerts with musicians like Gérard Caussé, Marta Gulyas, Suguru Ito, and Alexander Melnikov.

At the age of 16, he joined the internationally acclaimed Quartet Casals, a chamber ensemble with which he maintains a very active artistic career, performing concerts in top European venues and touring Latin America, the United States, and Japan. Since 2004, the quartet has exclusively recorded for Harmonia Mundi, with whom they have made 15 recordings to date. The quartet has been awarded the National Music Prize in 2006, the Ciutat de Barcelona Prize in 2005, and the National Culture Prize of Catalonia in 2016.

Since 2009, alongside his brother Arnau Tomàs and pianist Hyo-Sun Lim, he is a founding member of the Ludwig Trio. With this group, he has recorded two CDs for the Aglae label. One with Beethoven trios, and the other with Beethoven's Triple Concerto, featuring the Galicia Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Victor Pablo Pérez.

Teaching

Apart from his concert activity, Abel Tomàs teaches chamber music at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, and has been invited as a chamber music teacher at the Musikchochschule in Cologne. He is also a guest professor at the Forum Musikae School in Madrid and at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. In addition, he participates in various courses and masterclasses in both Europe and the United States.
