Learning outcomes (general objectives)
- Identify the major periods of Western culture in relation to their artistic and intellectual manifestations, as well as the corresponding periods in the history of music.
- Apply the concepts and basic elements commonly used to periodise the history of European and Western music, placing them within their respective social and cultural contexts.
- Identify and classify the different philosophical conceptions and positions in the Western world regarding musical activities, always relating them to their contemporary social and cultural contexts.
- Analyse a range of cultural and musical products in order to evaluate the historical elements that converge within them and contribute to their understanding.
- Identify the historical and cultural context of each musical work or product and contextualise it appropriately.
Contents
Periodisation of Western culture in relation to the history of music and the arts. Major artistic schools and centres. Music historiography. Processes of transformation and change in the history of Western music. Periodisation of Western music history in relation to its social context. Musical movements, schools of thought, artistic schools, centres, instruments, instrumental ensembles and leading figures. Historical contextualisation of musical activities and products. The relationship between musical thought and the cultural context of each historical period. Historical and stylistic positioning of musical activities and their constituent elements.
Teaching methodology
Teaching and learning are based on lectures devoted to the presentation of course content, discussion and seminar sessions, group work and student presentations. Independent learning consists of individual assignments and tasks.
