Learning outcomes (general objectives)

  1. Understand the place of music within the new global environment and interpret the meaning of the points of convergence between the logics of communication and culture.

Contents

Public speaking techniques. Meeting management. Negotiation techniques. Communication. Group dynamics. Public presentations. Negotiation simulations. Practical group work. Motivation techniques. Leadership. Theory and practice of organisations serving people. Sociological theories of musical activities and the principal concepts and methodologies of the discipline. Analysis of musical situations from a sociological perspective and through the principal methodological approaches of the field. Positioning the main traditions of sociological thought within their corresponding cultural contexts.

The dynamics of music distribution. Live music. Recorded music. Social media as a means of dissemination, communication and interaction. The functioning of the music business. Types of musical ensembles: their specific characteristics in relation to their markets and management. The transformation of music production: its consequences and applications for distribution. The evolution of the music business.

Teaching methodology

The teaching and learning methodology includes lectures (topic presentations), discussion and seminar sessions, group work sessions, and student presentations.

Assessment systems

Assessment is based on continuous evaluation, grounded in an initial diagnostic assessment and culminating in a summative assessment that determines the final grade. Continuous assessment is carried out through a range of assessment instruments derived from specific learning activities, including class participation and engagement, oral presentations, assignments and/or readings completed outside class, written coursework, and written or oral examinations.
