Learning outcomes (general objectives)

1. Compose and orchestrate effectively for the instruments of flamenco.
2. Demonstrate command of the idiomatic and expressive resources of flamenco instruments, using them together while controlling stylistically appropriate phrasing.
3. Develop analytical skills relating to the different characteristics, styles and variants of flamenco music.
4. Understand and formalise the technical, rhythmic, harmonic and melodic elements that shape flamenco music from the perspectives of composition and improvisation.
5. Compare and contextualise the distinctive musical characteristics of flamenco with those of other traditional musical cultures.
6. Develop techniques and criteria for the notation of flamenco music.
7. Recognise, identify and explain, both theoretically and practically—through notation, documentary sources and audiovisual materials—the fundamental elements and palos (song forms) of flamenco styles, including both music and texts, within their historical development and in relation to other contemporary musical traditions.
8. Acquire a broad overview of the flamenco repertoire in order to deepen overall knowledge of this musical tradition.
9. Place a work or performance within its stylistic and historical context by recognising its compositional, stylistic and formal characteristics and drawing appropriate conclusions.

Rhythms, mixed metres and rhythmic permutations in flamenco. Metric and accentual rhythm. Melismatic forms and variations. Microtonal features. The flamenco mode: harmonic and tonal relationships. Historical development of flamenco technique. Influences, innovations and harmonic expansion in contemporary flamenco. Formal structures and the relationship between singing, guitar, percussion and dance. Recognition and analysis of the defining musical elements of flamenco. Geographical distribution of the various flamenco styles and regional variants. Practical instrumental knowledge (voice, melodic-harmonic instruments or percussion) of flamenco rhythms and techniques. Transcription and notation of flamenco music. Organisational models of flamenco styles (musical, textual and gestural) in relation to their social context and historical transformation. Social and cultural history of flamenco and the social values associated with it. Documentary and bibliographical sources for flamenco studies. Teaching methodology

Teaching and learning combine lectures, seminar discussions, group work and student presentations. Independent work includes composition projects, the study of repertoire and the preparation of written assignments, both individually and collaboratively.
