Learning outcomes (general objectives)

1. Describe the different ways in which musical materials have been organized across the various styles and periods of modern music.
2. Apply the most appropriate analytical methodologies critically and flexibly according to both the musical work under study and the objectives of the analysis.
3. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the vertical and harmonic organization characteristic of modern music.
4. Harmonize and reharmonize original or existing compositions with stylistic consistency.
5. Create original melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic material based on formal structures characteristic of modern music.
6. Analyse musical forms, harmonic progressions, and melodies by major composers from different periods of modern music.

Contents

Parameters and elements that structure musical discourse. Hierarchical relationships among these parameters. The relationship between musical parameters and stylistic characteristics. Musical form as it relates to both composition and improvisation. Analytical methodologies for the study of music. Identification of the elements that shape musical works. Stylistic determinants in modern music. Development of autonomy in the application of analytical methodologies. Analytical techniques adapted to the specific musical parameters under study. Application of analytical techniques to selected short musical excerpts. Evaluation of both common and less conventional harmonic progressions.

Teaching methodology

The teaching and learning methodology combines lectures (presentation of course content), seminar discussions, group work, and student presentations.

Independent study includes the composition of original works, the study of musical repertoire, and the completion of written assignments, both individually and collaboratively.

Assessment systems

The assessment system is based on continuous assessment, founded on an initial diagnostic assessment and culminating in a summative assessment that determines the final grade.

Continuous assessment is carried out through a range of assessment methods derived from specific learning activities, including class participation and engagement, in-class presentations, the completion of compositions, analyses and reading assignments outside class, the submission of written work, and written, oral, and aural examinations.
