Learning outcomes (general objectives)

1. Describe the various ways in which musical materials have been organised in the different styles and periods of jazz. 
2. Apply analytical methodologies most appropriate to the work under analysis and to the purposes of that analysis, with discernment and flexibility. 
3. Demonstrate the precise ability for the vertical-harmonic understanding characteristic of jazz music. 
4. To harmonise and reharmonise original or existing compositions with stylistic coherence. 
5. Develop original melodic, harmonic and rhythmic material over jazz formal structures. 
6. Analyse forms, harmonic progressions and melodies by major composers from different eras of jazz. 

Contents

Parameters and elements that structure musical discourse. Hierarchies of these parameters. Relationship with styles. The relationship between composition and improvisation. Analytical methodologies. Identification of elements that shape works. Determinants of styles. Autonomy in the application of analytical methodologies. Diversified analytical techniques according to the parameters to be studied. Application of analytical techniques to short, selective sequences. Evaluation of common and less common harmonic progressions. 

Teaching methodology

The teaching-learning methodology in classes involves lectures (topic presentations), debate and discussion sessions, group work sessions and student presentations. Autonomous work involves compositions, analyses of works and written assignments, either individually or in groups. 

Assessment systems

The assessment system is continuous assessment, based on diagnostic assessment and materialised in a summative assessment which leads to the final grade. Continuous assessment is carried out through various assessment records derived from specific assessment activities such as participation and work in class, the presentation of work in class, the completion of assignments, compositions, analyses and/or readings outside of class, the submission of written work or the taking of written, oral or aural tests.
