Education

Josep Maria Martí Duran began learning plucked string instruments after completing his classical guitar studies with Jordi Codina. He then studied with Xavier Díaz-Latorre at ESMUC in Barcelona, with Massimiliano Toni in Novara, and with Eduardo Egüez at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste in Zurich.

Concerts

From the very beginning, he has worked with leading ensembles specializing in early music, with whom he continues to collaborate regularly. Some of the most renowned groups include Le Concert des Nations and Hespèrion XXI (dir. Jordi Savall), L’Arpeggiata (dir. Christina Pluhar), Early Opera Company (dir. Christian Curnyn), Les Arts Florissants (dir. W. Christie), Il Giardino Armonico (dir. G. Antonini), and Cafe Zimmermann (dir. Pablo Valetti), among others.

Recordings

In addition to an extensive discography with the aforementioned ensembles, he has also developed two more personal recording projects: Eternità d’Amore, a duo album with American tenor Zachary Wilder focused on 17th-century Italian music, presented in June 2019 at the Boston Early Music Festival to great public and critical acclaim; and the release of his debut solo album, offering a new perspective on the works of G. F. Händel and H. Purcell by reimagining some of their most famous opera arias for theorbo. Entitled Ad Álgea, this project was warmly received by audiences and critics alike, earning the prestigious “Exceptional” distinction from the specialized magazine Scherzo, and leading to a performance at the renowned Händel-Festspiele in Halle in the 2023 season.

Career

In his intense concert career, he has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious venues and has recorded several times for broadcasters such as France Musique, Radio France, RNE, BBC and Catalunya Ràdio, as well as for labels including Warner Classics & Erato, SONY, and Alpha.

Teaching

As a teacher, he has given masterclasses at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, the 11th Academy of the Capella Reial de Catalunya led by Jordi Savall, the Pôle des Arts Baroques in Toulouse, and is currently teaching at ESMUC.
