In 2024, the Fundació Frederic Mompou announces the first edition of study grants for the research and performance of the composer Frederic Mompou’s music.

Purpose

This grant has been created to encourage the study of Frederic Mompou’s work in the academic and research context of the Master’s Degree in Classical and Contemporary Music Performance at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC).
The aim of the grant is to support projects that integrate the performance and research of Frederic Mompou’s music in a single project:

  • The performance of Frederic Mompou’s work on any of the instruments for which he composed most significantly, i.e., piano, voice and guitar.

  • Research in any performative or musicological field related to the work of Frederic Mompou.

Requirements

In order to obtain the Frederic Mompou Scholarship, it will be essential for the Final Master’s thesis to include, in whole or in part, the performance of Mompou’s work and a research study providing knowledge on any aspect related to the composer, either exclusively or shared with other composers.

With regard to the performance of piano and vocal works, the Final Master’s Concert must be made up of at least 50% of its duration with works by Mompou. In the guitar modality, it will be with the totality of the work written for this instrument.

With regard to the written work, research in any of the fields of performance research or current musicology (biographical, historical, aesthetic, theoretical, sociological, iconographic, critical reception, etc.) may be presented exclusively or partially, on the requirement that the composer is part of it.

Presentation of applications

Applications may be presented by those who wish to study the official Master’s Degree in Classical and Contemporary Music Performance at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) in the instrumental modalities of piano, voice and guitar, but only those candidates who have previously passed the corresponding protocol for access to the Master’s Degree will be taken into consideration.

The scholarship application must provide a summary of a maximum of 700 words, containing the aims and a brief presentation of the nature and methodology of the research with a programme proposal for the Final Master’s Concert.

The Final Master’s Thesis (concert and written work) will be carried out once the grant has been awarded.

The written thesis may be presented in Catalan, Spanish, English or French. Applications from any nationality are accepted.

The deadline for submitting applications is 12 July 2024.
