Education

He was born in Barcelona in 1959, where he pursued his musical studies at the Municipal Conservatory of Music.

Recordings

He has recorded more than twenty albums as a leader and many others as a collaborator.

Awards

He has received several composition awards, notably the first prize in the Jazz Composition Competition of Monaco, and the first prize in the Latin Jazz Composition Competition organised by SGAE.

He has also been honoured with the National Music Award from the Generalitat de Catalunya, and the Best Pianist and Composer Award from the Associació de Músics de Jazz i Música Moderna de Catalunya in various editions.

Career

He was a founder of the Chamber Orchestra of Teatre Lliure (1985), as well as several jazz groups, including Catalònia (1977), Onix (1983), Ictus (1987), and his own trio. He also founded the tango group Araca (1995).

He has recorded numerous radio and television programmes and has performed at major festivals in Spain, Portugal, France, England, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Bulgaria, Israel, the USA, China, and Argentina.

He has collaborated with jazz musicians such as Dave Douglas, Wynton Marsalis, John Abercrombie, Dave Liebman, and Kenny Wheeler, among others; classical musicians like Josep Pons, Walter Boykens, and H.K. Gruber, and tango musicians like Rodolfo Mederos, Horacio Ferrer, and Pablo Mainetti.

He has performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Big Band of Belgian RTV, the City of Granada Orchestra, the Classical National Orchestra of Andorra, the Beethoven Academie of Belgium, the Andrés Segovia Chamber Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Spain, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia, the Valencia Orchestra, the Orfeó Català, and the Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya.

For eighteen years, he has been part of the Chamber Orchestra of Teatre Lliure, contributing as a pianist, arranger, composer, and artistic and musical director.

As a composer, he has received numerous commissions, including:

Iberiana (2019) commissioned by the Ciutat Flamenco Festival of Taller de Músics, Partícules (2018), commissioned by the educational service of the Auditori, Crònica d'un any (2018), commissioned by the Granollers Jazz festival, En Clau de Flor (2017), commissioned by the Chamber Orchestra of Granollers, Diàlegs (2015), commissioned by the Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya, Dues nadales en clau de jazz (2012), commissioned by the Orfeó Català, From chaos with love (2011), commissioned by the group BCN216, Concierto para Quinteto de Metales y Orquesta (2010), commissioned by the group Spanish Brass Luur Metalls, La llegenda de Sant Jordi (2009), commissioned by the Cobla Sant Jordi, Iberia (2004), commissioned by the Orquesta Nacional de España, Vermeer (2001) commissioned by the Plaza Festival, and Nueva York en un poeta (1997), commissioned by the City of Granada Orchestra.

He has composed music for film, theatre, and numerous works for big band, orchestra, soloists, and various ensembles, in addition to the material he performs with his piano trio.

Teaching

He has been a professor at AMMJ from the Taller de Músics (of which he was the musical director for three years), and currently, he is a professor at ESMUC.
