Learning outcomes (general objectives)

1. Develop analytical skills regarding the different characteristics, styles and variants of flamenco music.
2. Understand and formalise the technical, rhythmic, harmonic and melodic aspects involved in flamenco composition and improvisation.
3. Compare and contextualise the distinctive musical features of flamenco in relation to other traditional music traditions.
4. Recognise, identify and explain—through notation, documentary sources and audiovisual media—the fundamental elements and palos of flamenco (music and lyrics), placing them within historical processes of transformation and relating them to other contemporary musical traditions.
5. Analyse and evaluate the historical development of flamenco styles and performers in relation to the social and cultural contexts in which they evolved, while critically assessing the relevant historiography.
6. Compare theoretical studies on flamenco music concerning styles, historical transformation processes and the social life of music.
7. Acquire an overview of the flamenco repertoire that broadens overall knowledge of this musical tradition.
8. Identify the style or historical period of a work or performance through recognition of its compositional, stylistic and formal features, drawing appropriate conclusions.

Rhythms, rhythmic amalgams and rhythmic permutations in flamenco. Metric and accentual rhythm. Melismatic forms and variations. Microtonal aspects. The flamenco mode: harmonic and tonal relationships. Historical evolution of flamenco technique. Influences, innovations and harmonic expansion in contemporary flamenco. Formal structures: relationships between singing, guitar, percussion and dance. Recognition and analysis of the musical elements characteristic of flamenco. Geographical distribution of styles and variants. Practical instrumental knowledge (voice, melodic-harmonic instruments or percussion) of flamenco rhythms and techniques. Teaching methodology
