Learning outcomes (general objectives)

1. Demonstrate mastery of the idiomatic and expressive resources of flamenco instruments, knowing how to use them together while controlling the phrasing that is aesthetically characteristic of them.
2. Develop analytical skills regarding the different characteristics, styles, and variants of flamenco music.
3. Understand and formalize the technical, rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic aspects that converge in flamenco music at compositional and improvisational levels.
4. Compare and contextualize the distinctive musical characteristics of flamenco in relation to other traditional musics.
5. Develop techniques and criteria for flamenco musical notation.
6. Recognize, identify, and explain theoretically and practically —through notation, documents, and audiovisual resources— the fundamental elements and palos of flamenco styles (music and texts), within their historical transformation processes, and relate them to other contemporary musics.
7. Possess an overview of the flamenco repertoire that allows for a broader understanding of this musical style.
8. Place a work or performance within a style or historical period through the recognition of the compositional, stylistic, and formal elements involved, drawing relevant conclusions.

Contents

Flamenco rhythms, rhythmic amalgamations, and rhythmic permutations. Metric rhythm and accentual rhythm. Melodic forms and melismatic variations. Microtonal aspects. The flamenco mode: harmonic and tonal relationships. Historical development of flamenco technique. Influences, incorporations, and harmonic expansion in contemporary flamenco.

Formal structures: relationships between singing, guitar, percussion, and dance. Recognition and analysis of the musical elements characteristic of flamenco. Geographical location of different styles and variants. Practical instrumental knowledge (voice, melodic-harmonic instruments, or percussion instruments) of the different flamenco rhythms and techniques. Notation practices for flamenco music.

Organizational models of flamenco styles (musical, textual, and gestural), in relation to social context and transformation processes. Social and cultural history of flamenco and the social values associated with it. Documentary and bibliographic sources for flamenco studies.

Theoretical and practical analysis and recognition of different flamenco styles. Socially contextualized analysis of values and concepts surrounding flamenco. Historical and aesthetic positioning of different interpretations of flamenco styles. Exchange and discussion of research on flamenco.

Historical overview of the general repertoire. Historical and stylistic perspective. Models of sound organization. Geographical variants and regional classification. Critical listening, analysis, and reading of works and versions from the flamenco repertoire from a global perspective. Identification within styles, areas, periods, and trends. Composition and arrangement in flamenco.

Teaching methodology

The teaching and learning methodology in classes includes lectures (presentation of topics), discussion and seminar sessions, group work sessions, and student presentations of selected topics.

Independent study involves the creation of compositions, the study of musical works, and the completion of written assignments, both individually and in groups.

Assessment systems

The assessment system is based on continuous assessment, founded on a diagnostic assessment and consolidated through a summative assessment that determines the final grade.

Continuous assessment is carried out through different assessment records derived from specific activities, such as participation and work in class, in-class presentations, completion of assignments, compositions, analyses and/or readings outside class, submission of written work, and written, oral, or aural examinations.
