The composer focuses her practice on material and formal restriction, excess, and the obsession with repetition, as well as the intimacies that emerge in dialogue with the past. Michel brings her expertise in performing contemporary music, reinforcing the collaborative nature of the session.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This lecture is partially funded by the <strong>MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music <\/strong>at the School of Music, Bowling Green State University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The composer<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Victoria Cheah, based in New York, is a composer whose work explores boundaries, transitions, and intimacies within the rituals of social performance. Her works have been commissioned and performed by ensembles such as <strong>TAK,<\/strong> <strong>PinkNoise<\/strong>, <strong>Talujon<\/strong>, <strong>Either\/Or<\/strong>, <strong>Switch Ensemble<\/strong>, <strong>Yarn<\/strong>\/<strong>Wire<\/strong>, and <strong>Wavefield Ensemble<\/strong>, among many others.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her recordings can be found on labels such as <strong>Dinzu Artefacts, New Focus Recordings, and XAS Records<\/strong>. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Composition at the <strong>Boston Conservatory<\/strong> and <strong>Berklee College of Music<\/strong>. In addition, she is the Production Director of the <strong>Talea Ensemble<\/strong>, one of the leading contemporary music ensembles.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:38px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roberta Michel<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:28px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The flautist Roberta Michel, based in Brooklyn, New York, is a performer dedicated to contemporary music. She has commissioned and premiered hundreds of new works and has collaborated with numerous prominent composers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is co-director of the <strong>Wavefield Ensemble<\/strong> and a member of groups such as <strong>Da Capo Chamber Players, PinkNoise, and Duo RoMi<\/strong>.
