Entrance to Esmuc official studies

What studies must I have done before taking the School’s entrance examination?

It is necessary to have done baccalaureate and medium grade music or to certify equivalent knowledge with a specific examination (one examination for each of the situations: baccalaureate and medium grade). The examination for candidates without medium grade consists of analysing a fragment or musical work on a score and an audition.

When are the entrance tests called?

In the last term of the previous year.

Are the entrance tests the same for all qualifications?

The entrance test has one part that is the same for all qualifications, and another with specific areas concerning the musical orientation of the qualification (jazz/modern music, ancient music, traditional music, classical/contemporary music, musicology, pedagogy, sonology, composition or conducting). The value of each of the parts depends on the nature of the studies the candidate wishes to do.

Is there a limit to the number entrance tests that a person can do?

Not at the present time.

Does the fact of passing the entrance test give the Medium Grade?

Does the fact of passing the entrance tests suppose admission to the Esmuc?

Passing the entrance tests does not suppose immediate admission to the centre. It depends on there being a sufficient number of places. Candidates will enter the School in descending order of the scores achieved.

For how long are the entrance tests valid?

The tests are only valid for the academic year in which they are done. If the candidate passes the test and does not gain a place in the centre, they must repeat the test the following year if they still want to do the course.

Do the dates of the entrance tests coincide with those of university entrance?

The School tries to make sure they don't.

Do you have to pass university entrance to join the School?

Organisation and dedication needed for the studies

Is it possible to change area or method once you have begun studies?

A change may be asked for in the first and second year by applying to the School Academic Secretariat. The decision regarding this request will depend on the number of places available in each area and method, and the applicant’s ability in the area they wish to enter. A specific test may also be required for them to demonstrate their ability.

How many class hours are there per week?

The students’ workload in the Graduate School of Music of Catalonia has been estimated at 50 hours a week, of which between 15 and 20 are class hours.

How many individual instrument hours are there per week?

The time put into the main instrument is 90 minutes a week. The time put into the secondary instrument is 45 minutes every fortnight throughout the degree.

Do the studies require exclusive dedication?

Yes, as there is a limit of six years for passing the course, although the duration is usually four years.

Are subjects studied in other degrees accepted? And previous musical studies?

By application to the Academic Secretariat of the Graduate School of Music of Catalonia, the centre can accept subjects completed in other higher education centres, for example, in universities. The application must include certification of passing the subject, and also the subject’s description. Acceptance of previous musical studies is established only through Royal Decree 706, of 19 July 2002, regulating certain incorporations in the higher degree in music teaching and equivalences for academic effects of music, chant and dance studies of previous study plans (Plan 66).

Can an instrument be studied in the ESMUC as an elective subject for another university degree?

Characteristics of Esmuc's qualifications

Are the ESMUC qualifications truly university degrees?

They are equivalent in all respects, but they are not a university degree as they are not given by a university. However, both are equally higher level.

Can two degrees be done at the same time?

No. In agreement with the tutor, it is possible to choose optional and elective subjects in such a way that if one if the students has achieved the first degree they want to do another (and are able to do so in the times that the School provides for those who already have a first degree), they will not need four years to do it, but a much shorter time.

Can another degree be done consecutively?

Yes. However, the entrance test will have to be repeated and, if a new spot is obtained, students can have the corresponding subjects accepted.

Does the ESMUC offer postgraduate studies?

The ESMUC has an offer of postgraduate courses that include continuous training, masters degrees and postgraduate diplomas.

The cost of the bachelor of music equals the cost of a public or of a private university?

It depends on where the courses are taken. At the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya they have the prices of public higher studies, equivalent to those of technical degrees, which vary depending on the credits for which students enrol. If they are taken in private centres, they will have the prices of a private university.
