Introduction

The Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) has included research among its objectives since it first began.

The Reorganization Process of the European Space of Higher Education, also referred to as the Bologna Declaration, has generated new bases for higher artistic education at all levels. A new feature is the inclusion, promotion and development of research in the institutions of higher artistic education.

A large part of research activities must be developed by the students in their final projects or theses at the end of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles. However, projects should also be promoted at faculty, institutional and inter-institutional level.

Several European institutions have enabled and encouraged this work to be done in the area of music. Examples are the Polyphony project or the ICON group,  both promoted by the European Association of Conservatories (AEC ) to which Esmuc belongs.

The Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) has included research among its objectives since it first began. The implementation of this area of activity is based on the design of its own model, embraced in the European organizations.
