Xavier Puig

Born in Cervera (Catalonia) in 1973, he started his studies of violin at the Conservatory of this city and later he obtained the High Diploma of Harmony, Counterpoint and Composition at Badalona Professional Conservatoire. At the same time he was introduced to Choral Conducting with Josep Prats, Johan Duijck, Laszlo Heltay, Jordi Casas and with Pierre Cao. At this time, Maestro Salvador Mas introduced him to Orchestral Conducting in his lessons in Barcelona High Conservatoire and in Wiener Meisterkurs.

 

In 1999 he was accepted at the Universität für Musik in Viena (Austria), where he followed a 3-year Course in Orchestral Conducting under the teaching of Maestro Leopold Hager. In March 2001 he obtained the Erste Diplom of this prestigious centre. In March 2002 he won the contest to cover the vacant as Assistant Conductor of the JONDE (Spanish Youth National Orchestra). With this orchestra he conducted in the prestigious Festival Schleswig-Holstein, and in the famous Berliner Konzerthaus. In July 2005 he recorded also a CD on spanish lieder (Esplà, Gómez) with them. In July 2003 he gained the position as Assistant Conductor of the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC), with Ernest Martínez-Izquierdo as main conductor. In two years he conducted the OBC in different programs with music of Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Britten. In 2014 he recorded a series of pedagogical programs with OBC for the Catalan Television.

 

He has been guest conductor of the main catalan and spanish orchestras. Nowadays he is conductor of the chamber choir of Auditori Enric Granados in Lleida, with whom he has performed most of the classical choral-orchestral repertoire, and the choir Ginesta in Cervera. In 2002 founded a Chamber Opera Company (l'Opera de tres rals) with whom he performed the pocket opera repertoire, and conducted the Murtra Ensemble for 20th century music. He is teacher at the ESMUC (Catalan High School of Music) in Orchestra and Conducting, and he is artistic director of an Ester Festival in Cervera, a meeting dedicated to catalan classical music.
