Musical Education and Achievements

  • Studies at the Municipal Conservatory of Higher Education in Music, Barcelona: piano, guitar, choir, musical theory and harmony, 1972-1981.
    • Guitar and Voice studies at the Taller de Músics and at the l’Aula de Música Moderna i Jazz of Barcelona, 1984-1988: Diploma of the Catalan Institute of New Professions, (INCANOP).
    • Berklee School of Music, Boston, Massachusetts: majoring in Performance Voice, 1991 and Commercial Arranging, 1992, both Magna Cum Laude.
  • Conceded the “Grant for sojourns abroad for creators and cultural agents” by the Catalan Government, 1991.
  • Berklee Professional Writing Division Achievement Award for Arrangements, 1992.
  • Master classes and courses in Barcelona and London with Lina Richarte, Manel Cabero, Raquel Carvallo, Bob Stoloff, Sheila Jordan, Louciana Souza, Maria Friedman, Judy Niemack, Gillyanne Kayes, Paul Farrington, Daniel Zangger-Borch, Maureen Scott, Cathrine Sadolin.

Performance experience

 

  • First professional activity in choirs and choruses such as the Municipal Conservatory of Higher Education Choir directed by Enric Ribó, also taking part in the zarzuela “El Barberillo de Lavapiés” and in operas such as “Cosi fan tutte”, “La Traviata”, “Il Trovatore”, the latter performed at Teatre Grec and directed by Mario Gas, 1977-1982.
  • From 1985 to 1989 leader of the group “Absit Fusion”, and also singing all over Catalonia and Spain as freelance in various ensembles (pop, rock, soul…) including dance orchestras and jazz bands.
    • Collaboration as a vocalist and voice arranger on the albums “Flamenco Street Projects” by Thomas Lorenzo, with Fernando Tordo (“Tributo a los Laureados Nobel”), Sergio Moure (“De un tiempo a esta parte”), among others.
    • Album as a lead singer, 2010: “Still Crazy”, with own arrangements.
  • In the USA, 1989-1992: singer and arranger in various ensembles including latin orchestras, jazz groups, as well as in clubs, radio and TV in the New York and Massachusetts area.
  • In Barcelona, from 1992 to the present: Studio Singer on TV shows and campaigns “Basket Fever”, “Sintonia Municipals ’95 CIU”, “Está llegando la Navidad”, “Dones d’Aigua”, among others.
  • Leader of various groups including the “Mireia Lara Trio”.
  • Singer with the Big-Band of the Conservatori del Liceu’s School of Modern Music and Jazz with performances at the Palau de la Música and at the Liceu in Barcelona with Francesc Burrull as a director.
  • Director of the gospel/pop a cappella vocal group “Vox Seven”.
  • Collaborations with musicians such as Fernando Tordo, Julian Vaughan, Luc Barretto, Santi Arisa, Loti Lewis, Lautaro Rosas, David Mengual, David Xirgu, Sergio Moure, Lluis Ribalta, Iñaki Salvador, Ignasi Zamora, Marc Miralta, Elisabet Raspall, Manel Camp.
  • Singer of the “Manel Camp Jazz Quartet”.

 

Teaching experience

 

  • I have taught since 1987 at various schools, such as the Modern Music School in Cerdanyola del Vallès, the Benjamin Franklin School and the Avinyó Music School in Barcelona, the Municipal Music School of Sant Andreu de la Barca.
  • Among others, I have collaborated with Loti Lewis, Mili Bermejo, Bob Stoloff, Judy Niemack, Maureen Scott, Helen Rowson, Viv Manning and Gillyanne Kayes. With Carme Canela I presented the paper “La formació vocal específica del cantant de jazz” (“Specific vocal training for jazz singers” 2008), at the II Annual Conference of the Catalan Association of Voice Teachers (ACPC), of which I was a board member.
  • I have collaborated at the International Innovative Conservatoire (ICON) in the Research Working Group of the Polifonia I Project in Villecroze, France.
  • From 1992 to 2004 I taught theory, ear training, harmony, guitar, ensembles, voice, and improvisation to both adults and children as well as directing the School’s Modern Choir at Aula del Música Moderna i Jazz del Conservatori del Liceu in Barcelona. I also used to be Head of the Voice Department of the Conservatori. From 1995 to 1999 I shared management responsibilities in the Administration  Board of the School as well.
  • Since 1994 I have given seminars on jazz singing and voice in Catalonia and in the Basque Country (Igualada Music Conservatory, Barañaín Music Conservatory, Sant Sebastián Jazz Festival) among others.
  • From 2001 to the present I teach Jazz and Modern Singing and Instrumental Ensembles at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) in Barcelona.
