Rolf Bäcker

Bäcker, Rolf

Rolf Bäcker studied Musicology, Romance Studies and Iberian and Latin American History and the University of Cologne, Germany, where he obtained a PhD in Musicology with a thesis about "The Guitar as a Symbol: Meaning and Change within Spain's cultural memory from the Middle Ages to the end of the Siglo de Oro". He received fellowships from the Instituto Camões, the UOC (Open University of Catalonia) and the DAAD (German Academic Interchange Service). He currently works as a full professor at the ESMUC and is a member of several musicological societies, among them the Society of Ethnomusicology (SIBE). His scientific activity, which constantly crosses the boundaries between historical musicology and ethnomusicology, is complemented by practical activity as a guitar teacher at the Municipal Music School in Centelles, where he teaches classical, flamenco, acoustic and electric guitar, electric bass, group playing and modern improvisation. He currently works as a full professor and head of studies at the ESMUC.
